Have you ever bought a rug you loved, only to realize it didn’t look quite right once you rolled it out in your living room? You’re not alone! Choosing the correct rug size is one of the most common decorating struggles—and the wrong choice can make your room feel either cramped or disconnected. The good news is that with a few simple tips, you’ll never have to second-guess your rug purchase again.

In today’s video, I share 4 simple tips to help you choose the right rug size for your living room. Using a real 10’x17’ apartment living room as an example, I compare 4×6, 6×9, 8×10, 9×12, and 10×14 rugs so you can clearly see how each one changes the look and feel of the space.

What You’ll Learn in the Video:

  • Orient your rug with the sofa: Lining up the rug with the longest side of the sofa keeps your furniture and rug aligned, creating symmetry and balance.
  • Follow the front leg rule: At minimum, the front legs of your sofa and chairs should sit on the rug to connect the seating arrangement.
  • Allow for 1–2 feet of overhang: Extending the rug slightly beyond the sofa and chairs frames the seating area and prevents the space from looking too tight.
  • Leave a bare floor border: Keeping 8–18 inches of exposed flooring around the rug acts like a frame, ensuring your rug doesn’t overwhelm the room.

By applying these tips, you’ll be able to confidently choose a rug that not only fits your space but also makes your living room feel polished and inviting
